Pitching/Defense:

Jim started six games in 2006, successfully bucking the stigma of being solely a late inning specialist.  He faired well, and his ERA and K-rate bode better things to come.  Never overpowering, he works all parts of the plate, and challenges batters to take their hacks.

Batting/Baserunning

Possessing good zone awareness, West is very adept at fouling off pitches and protecting the plate when faced with two strikes.  He knows his strengths and doesn’t try to do too much.  Slapping fastballs the other way or pulling benders down the line, he hustles on everything hit, always putting pressure on opposing defenses.

2007 Outlook:

It’s reasonable to expect Westy to build upon his MVP distracted season, and once again improve his production.  A perennial Funster, he’s part of the synchronized Padre machine that keeps pumping out playoff appearances year after year.
